Disabled Refuge Systems
Disabled refuge systems are a requirement in many types of buildings

The refuge remote unit provides clear, hands free, two-way communication between person(s) in a refuge area and building control (or fire officers) during an evacuation event. This is a Type B outstation as defined in BS5839-9:2011 – for use by the public and disabled persons requiring assistance.

To comply with BS5839-9:2011 one refuge remote unit should be installed per refuge area. The recommended refuge remote mounting height is 900-1200mm from floor level (from the centre point).

Emergency Voice Communications
An EVC (Emergency Voice Communication) System enables communication between strategic points throughout the building or site and the central control point(s). EVC systems are generally needed in the following situations:

Emergency Voice
Communication

a) In any building or sports or similar venues where there are disabled people or people who may have difficulty negotiating the evacuation route.

b) In buildings with phased evacuation and/or fire fighting lifts where it facilitates secure communications for building managers, fire wardens and attending fire officers.

NOTE Installation of an EVC system might be appropriate for buildings without phased evacuation where the types, size and/or shape of the building necessitates communication between remote locations and a central control point, to facilitate evacuation or fire fighting.

c) At sports venues and in similar complexes, where it will assist stewards in controlling the evacuation of the area in an emergency. In some buildings it might be necessary to take into consideration that the EVC system will address multiple uses and the outstation design will reflect its intended use.
